Aspen Achievement Academy - Weather

One of the most frequently asked questions by our parents is regarding the weather conditions in Utah and how our students adapt to the variations in the weather. Since the Aspen Achievement Academy program is year round, our students have the opportunity to experience and learn about various weather conditions. They are taught skills necessary to adjust to these different conditions; and they are provided with appropriate clothing for varying temperatures.

During the summer months, daytime temperatures can reach the 80 to 90 degree range, thus the program is relocated to the cooler Boulder Mountain and Fish Lake areas. These locations provide the students with the opportunity to experience beautiful mountain terrain and a chance to sleep under the stars. All students are provided with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and various layers of clothing to provide the optimal protection from the sun and exposure to the elements. During the winter months, daytime temperatures average in the 45 to 70 degree range. During times of colder temperatures, staff move their groups to lower desert areas where the temperatures are warmer. During storms, they may move to a semi-permanent "YURT" shelter with a wood burning stove.

All of the clothing provided to the students is specially designed to support the winter weather and provide for the maximum amount of warmth and comfort. By utilizing a layering technique, the students learn to control their body temperature. In addition, each student carries a MSR metal bottle that can be filled with hot water and placed in a sock to warm them in their sleeping bags at night. Fires provide warmth at night and during day stops. Sleeping bags provide warmth in weather down to 20 degrees below zero. Self-constructed tents and natural environmental shelters offer additional coverage and warmth.

One of the many strengths of the Aspen program is the knowledge and sense of accomplishment students derive from learning how to adjust to different types of weather conditions. Our staff members are well-trained in all aspects of wilderness, leadership, and survival skills; teaching students through "hands-on" techniques. Through this experiential learning, students gain a sense of mastery over their environment and will learn skills for their future outdoor experiences.
