When A Child Needs Help
Being a teenager is tougher in today's society than it has ever been. Our teenagers are exposed to drugs, gangs, and violence. They lack the clear cut structure, support, and rites of passage of a simpler society. Without such clear-cut rites of passage into adulthood, many of our teenagers and families struggle with the transition from youth to adulthood.
Teens must make decisions learning to balance between independence and reliance upon their families. Poor decision-making, rebelliousness or over-dependence on the family may result in emotional, behavioral or substance abuse problems.
Nowhere is the need for simple "rites" for teens as apparent than in the case of the troubled teenager. Aspen Achievement
Academy's innovative program creates a modern rite of passage, combining outdoor experiential activities with proven therapeutic
modalities, to teach skills necessary for transition into mature adulthood. Students are presented with a series of four program
phases, each focusing on the development of specific skills.
How do you know if your teenager needs help? The following is a list of eight "at risk" characteristics.
Some of the skills taught are:- Low Self-reliance
- Healthy decision-making
- Coorporation
- Self respect
- Independence
- Communication Skills
- Appreciation
- Anger management
Once a student gains mastery of these skills and is ready for promotion to the next phase, they are given a celebration to recognize their accomplishment and personal growth. The completion of the program denotes the successful rite of passage to adulthood, culminating with the graduation ceremony.
